Vitamin D plays a key role for health. It is involved in many regulatory processes in body cells. Consequently, a vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of disease significantly.
In Switzerland, the Federal Office of Public Health published in 2012 an evaluation of the 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 concentrations of the population. It was found that about 50 percent of the Swiss population showed deficiencies (less than 20 ng / ml). Only in 30 percent of the population a minimum value of 30 ng / ml and above could be measured.
Vitamin D3 is four to sixteen times as active as vitamin D2 but the former is mostly derived from sheep wool and therefore most vitamin D3 dietary supplements available are not suitable for vegans.
Instead the Vitamin D3 is extracted from lichens and is therefore a purely plant-based product (vegan).
