Refreshing tea with carob pods

The idea for this tasty drink originally comes from Egypt. There it is prepared from carob, water, and sugar and served cool as a refreshing drink.

Preparation

Pour the water into a pot.
Break the carob by hand into small pieces or crush with scissors and add to the water with the sugar, xylitol, or agave syrup.
Bring to a boil and simmer covered for 10 to 20 minutes.
Strain the tea and refrigerate.

As a variation, you can add a small piece of caramel candy when preparing the tea. This melts in the boiling water and gives the tea an even stronger caramel note. Reduce the sugar, xylitol, or agave syrup to about 80 g in this variant.
The cooked and now soft pods and seeds can be used for other recipes. For example, they can be puréed or cut into small pieces and enjoyed in smoothies or muesli.

Carob is rich in valuable minerals and trace elements (e.g. iron, manganese, copper, calcium, magnesium, and calcium) etc. It also contains many B vitamins, vitamin A, and plenty of fibre.
